History of Indigenous Canadian Relations

In this course, a decolonized view is implemented to examine the stages of relationship with Indigenous peoples in Canada from contact to the present day by centering Indigenous perspectives, worldviews, and experiences. Periods of cooperation and negotiation during the fur trade and treaty-making era, the impact of colonial policies, collective perspectives, and governmental role in the relational process are considered. An understanding of the ongoing effects of colonization and the restorative efforts of Indigenous peoples to reclaim their rights, sovereignty, and cultural heritage will be examined.
