Semester 1

DE 135 Orofacial Anatomy Online

This course focuses on a comprehensive review of dental anatomy. This knowledge will allow for the appropriate utilization of terminology, gain insight into the anatomy of oral structures by studying the specific theory regarding oral histology and embryology. This will provide background regarding the early development of the head and neck, which will aid in the knowledge required for dental radiology. This is a pre-requisite course to DE 115 - Dental Radiography.

Semester 2

DE 115 Dental Radiography

The purpose of this course is for professionals (i.e. nurses, receptionists, dental assistants) currently employed in a dental practice in Ontario who wish to meet the requirements of the Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act (HARP). This course is to present the theory and practical applications of radiation protection and safety techniques. The HARP ACT (1990) will be examined in depth. Compliance with this act provides the framework for this course of study. The practical portion of this course will offer the student an opportunity to apply theory and provide practical experience in the safe exposure, processing, mounting, and the evaluating of dental x-ray images. Upon completion of this course, the student will be qualified to safely operate an x-ray machine in the province of Ontario set out by the HARP requirements.

Program Overview

The Dental Radiography Program is designed for dental professionals currently working in a dental office who are looking to enhance their diagnostic skills and improve patient care through advanced imaging technologies. This program focuses on the accurate and safe use of radiographic techniques and provides essential knowledge in dental imaging.

Participants will study both theoretical and practical aspects of dental radiography, including oral and facial anatomy, radiation safety, and X-ray techniques to diagnose and monitor dental diseases and anomalies. Emphasis will also be placed on meeting provincial and federal regulations for radiographic practices, as well as patient care, equipment operation, and image interpretation.

Admission Requirements

Program Requirements for domestic students

Age Requirement: 19 years of age or older, or
Education Requirement: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C), or Open (O) preparation levels, including Grade 12 English (E/C/U). or
- Successful completion of the Mature Student Assessment.
- Successful completion of the General Education Development Test (GED).
- Completion of appropriate credits from the Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) program (LBS Level 5 Communications and LBS Level 4 Mathematics).
Additional Requirement: Applicants must be currently employed in a dental office for at least one year and provide a proof of employment letter from their employer.
