  • OL 103 Employment Law

    Employment law affects numerous human resource management activities including planning, recruiting, selection, compensation, retention, and termination of employees. The purpose of this course is to review the legal and managerial implications of employment law for human resource management. It includes the formation, terms, regulation and termination of the employment relationship. The course topics include: sources of employment law; whether individuals are employees or independent contractors; discrimination and human rights; employment standards; the duties employees owe to employers; the duties employers owe to employees; formation of the employment contract; the terms of an employment contract; privacy; termination of employment; wrongful dismissal; health and safety; workplace safety and insurance; equity issues; and how employment related information can be found on the internet.

  • OL 135 Human Resource Management Principles

    Specific focus is on the factors that affect the overall atmosphere in the workplace and that which contributes to an environment conducive to maximum productivity. Students will be introduced to effective strategies for hiring, motivating, managing, training, and retaining staff. Students will study the following topics: the strategic importance of Human Resources and the role of the HR Manager; competitive challenges facing Human Resources; job analysis and design; Human Resources planning; recruitment and selection; orientation and training; employee relations; performance management; compensation; employee benefits and services; labour relations; health and safety; equity and diversity; and international human resources management. Significant emphasis will be placed on the team approach to creative problem-solving techniques and heir application to selected case studies and a project that replicates actual on-the-job activities.   • OL 142 Training and Development

    The purpose of the Training and Development course is to provide students with an understanding of both the role of training and development in human resources management, and the procedures associated with the training and development function. The course will include the four key elements of the training and development function: needs analysis procedures, program design and development, facilitation and program administration, and evaluation. Students will be introduced to the psychology of the learning process on which training and development is based and will gain an understanding of the design, implementation, and evaluation of training programs within organizations. Topics to be covered include adult learning theory, establishing learning objectives, the role of the training and development practitioner, needs analysis procedures, training and non-training solution strategies, effective facilitation, strategies for transferring the learning back to the work environment, and evaluation methods.   • OL 173 Introduction to Business Management and Organizational Behaviour

    This subject is an examination of the contemporary Canadian business environment including the organization, leadership and management decision process which influences the behaviour of individuals and groups. Increased global competition, technological change and the rising expectations of both employees and employers have underlined the need for improved and more effective leadership. This subject provides a better understanding of this process. This course includes mandatory group work.   • OL 185 Compensation Management

    This course provides the student with the foundation of the reward systems found in all organizations, whether profit or not-for-profit. The course examines both the theoretical and applied aspects of the compensation function, with special consideration of the major factors that influence the actual design of a compensation system.

  • OL 404 Occupational Health and Safety

    This course introduces participants to the broad and ever-changing field of occupational health and safety, an inherently technical subject area. The multiple dimensions of the various issues--technical, legislative, political, and personal--are a required part of the training for a professional in this field or for someone who is involved with this kind of operation. Major topic areas include the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WCB, WHMIS, transportation of dangerous goods, accident prevention and investigation, physical and biological agents, and the management of Occupational Health and Safety programs.

  Semester 2

  • HR 519 Human Rights in Employment

    This course provides students with an in-depth study of Canadian legal principles and practices related to discrimination in employment. Students will examine prohibited grounds of discrimination regarding employment, the employer’s obligation to accommodate to the point of undue hardship under Human Rights law, and the employer’s role in making the workplace accessible under the Ontario Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Students will also consider strategies to address discrimination and harassment in the workplace and discuss the employer’s responsibility to ensure a harassment-free workplace.

  • OL 115 Introduction to Financial Management Accounting

    The focus of this course is to provide students with an understanding of accounting, financial statements analysis, and managerial accounting-based decisions used by business and human resources managers. The fundamental principles of financial and management accounting will be combined with practical applications relating to various organizational forms. Using accounting information to help effect plans, controls, and decisions will be emphasized. It is recommended that students have a basic knowledge of accounting before taking this subject.   • OL 133 Personnel Research Techniques and HRIS

    This subject involves the study of research techniques as they pertain to the measurement and conditioning of workforce behaviour. The subject provides knowledge related to the introduction of electronic human resources information systems (HRIS) into an organization by discovering project management, planning and implementation models. The value of HRIS to effective human resources (HR) research activities will be explored by looking at actual practices of HR professionals. This course includes mandatory group work.   • OL 137 Recruitment & Selection

    A basic study is undertaken of the principles, issues, trends, and legislative requirements affecting recruitment and selection. Human Resources professionals need an understanding of how recruitment and selection fits into the broader organizational structure, processes, and goals of an organization and how this function is related to the other functions of Human Resources management. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to successfully identify human resource requirements and attract and retain an effective workforce for an organization. The changing legal environment and the impact of laws on recruitment and selection are an important component of this course.

  • OL 172 Human Resources Planning & Development

    The focus is on human resources (HR) planning and includes the design of employee evaluation plans. Students learn how to forecast the human resources needs of an organization and to relate the requirements of the organization within ambient socio-political situations.   • OL 174 Industrial Relations

    The subject will explore the nature of the industrial relations process. Considerable emphasis will be placed on negotiating and administering the collective agreement through to grievance arbitration.
