Registered Nurse – Prescribing

• Understanding the scope and limitations of RN prescribing in Ontario, in line with CNO guidelines.

• Adhering to Health Canada’s protocols for reporting adverse drug reactions.

• Employing diagnostic reasoning in medication prescription, grounded in thorough health assessments.

• Implementing pharmacological principles, underpinned by evidence-based decision-making.

• Applying ethical decision-making in prescribing, with a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

• Maintaining precise records of assessments, diagnoses, and prescriptions.

• Ensuring client understanding of medication plans, including side-effects and interactions.

• Developing effective client follow-up strategies.

Graduates will be equipped to prescribe medications for specific health conditions, enhancing their roles in diverse settings such as long-term care and retirement homes. This expansion of services will address critical needs in the healthcare sector and contribute significantly to patient care in Ontario.

Program Requirements (for domestic students)

1. Active RN Registration: Applicants must possess an active, unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). A CNO registered number must be provided during the application process.

2. Clinical Experience Requirement: Candidates are required to have completed 3,900 hours of direct post-graduation clinical practice within the last five years.

3. Placement Proposal: Applicants should propose a potential placement location for their clinical practicum. This placement needs to be under the supervision of a qualified Nurse Practitioner or Physician.

• CPR Certification: CPR Level C-HCP certification is necessary for all applicants.

• Clear Criminal Record Check: A clear Criminal Police Information Check (CPIC) with a vulnerable sector check is mandatory.

• Immunization Status: Applicants must have up-to-date immunizations in accordance with healthcare standards.
