This course takes a decolonized approach to examining Canadian history and the relationship between Indigenous peoples, settlers, and the Canadian government from first contact to the present. Focusing on Indigenous perspectives, worldviews, and experiences, it highlights early cooperation and partnerships during the fur trade, the significance of the treaty-making era, and the profound impact of British and early Canadian colonial policies on Indigenous rights, communities, and identity. The course also analyzes the lasting effects of colonization and the ongoing efforts of Indigenous peoples to heal from harm, reclaim their rights, and restore their culture in contemporary Canada. Finally, the course highlights Indigenous resilience, resistance, and resurgence in shaping modern society, deepening understanding of the historical and current dynamics between Indigenous peoples and Canada. This insight is crucial for engaging with the ongoing process of truth and reconciliation in Canada today.

You must be 19 years of age or older to register for an OntarioLearn course. Students 18 years of age or less must possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent to register.
Online courses have a variety of evaluation methods and may include the use of exams and/or assignments. All assessments are online will be completed through the course. The course schedule will indicate evaluations and their deadlines.
Certificates are not granted for taking individual courses. A copy of an official transcript can show course completion.
Online courses may have multiple start dates. Though we cannot guarantee a course will start in a future semester, we post At a Glance documents on our website around a month prior to registration open to show what is being offered.
Though many courses have been built to be textbook free, there is a chance that a textbook will be required. Textbooks are an additional cost and not included in the course fee. Review our textbook website to find textbook and purchasing information.
Withdrawal requests can be sent via email. Please include the course code and title in the email you send. Withdrawal dates and details can be found in the welcome email that is sent after registration or on our withdrawal website.
You will receive a welcome email with course information and login details.
Welcome emails are sent around noon on business days and 4 weeks prior to a course start date.
